Monthly Archives: February2016

hi archyive

On Saturday March 5, 2016, the Monthly Vigil for Peace and Justice sponsored by the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/Fellowship of Reconciliation will be held from 12 noon to 1 pm at the corner of Main St. and Illinois Ave. in Carbondale. The Vigil will have the theme END THE ILLINOIS BUDGET CRISIS. The Peace Coalition and cosponsor, SIU Faculty Association, echo the call of the Responsible Budget Coalition for Illinois leaders to pass a responsible budget. From their December, 2015 report: “State leaders have abandoned investments that provide opportunities to get a good education and a good job, promote health and safety, allow children to grow and succeed, provide support  for those caring for children, seniors and those with disabilities, and foster thriving communities.” The right choice for Illinois is to “choose revenue.”

Southern Illinois is especially impacted by the growing crisis in education. State universities and community colleges are taking drastic measures to keep the doors open. Uncertainty drives away good students and quality faculty and staff. Unpaid vendors slow the economy of the state. Failure to adopt fair tax policies and budget will begin by hurting the most vulnerable but will eventually degrade the lives of all our citizens.

Following the vigil, at 1:15 pm, the Peace Coalition will have a monthly meeting at Cristaudo’s Café and Bakery. All are invited.
